"I thought hunters were the good guys," I said, hoping I could do something to distract them.

They didn't respond. Instead, the hunter with the stake in hand lunged at me. I dodged his blow and moved to the other side of the room.

The bed separated me from the three masked hunters and for a moment, we all stood our ground. The other two hunters removed their stakes and took a few steps forward, stopping behind the one who attacked me first.

I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't have any weapons on me and I didn't want to blow my cover, but if they kept advancing, I wasn't going to have a choice.

Out of the corner of my eye, movement drew my attention away from the waiting hunters. Roan was on his feet again.

"I always knew you were playing dirty, Carter," Roan said.

The hunter who made the first move pulled off his mask and goggles. A pair of deep brown eyes framed by dark, thick brows stared at Roan with a look of pure hatred. The man was a few inches shorter than Roan, but his chiseled jaw and full lips made him just as attractive. Was there a beauty requirement for joining the hunters? Seriously. Nobody who was trying to kill me should be this handsome. The only upside I could find was that he clearly wasn't fae. He was probably a shifter, which made him harder to kill, but less lethal than a fae.

The other two hunters removed their masks and goggles and I nearly laughed in relief. One of the hunters was a woman, fae by the look of her. She was just as tall as Carter and had the same violet eyes and light blonde hair as Roan. Her hair was pinned back in a series of elaborate braids that circled her head.

The third member of the group was about a foot shorter than the others. He had wide, bloodshot eyes and pale skin. When he smiled, I could just make out the fangs in his mouth. I hadn't been around many vampires, but at least they were easier to kill than Fae. He would be my first target.

Carter smiled at Roan, focused only on him at the moment. "You know that's not true, Roan. Everyone plays dirty, you're the weak link here."

"Since when do we kill innocent bystanders?" Roan asked.

"She stopped being a bystander the moment you involved her in this," Carter said.

"Whatever you're doing with these flowers, the board won't stand for it," Roan said. "As soon as they investigate, you're all going down."

Carter was still smiling at Roan, but I was only half paying attention. My main focus had shifted to the fae woman behind him. She'd changed the position of her grip on her stake. She was no longer holding it in a defensive way, she'd adjusted it to take the offensive.

I glanced over at Roan. His hand was on his stake, ready to pull. He seemed to know that neither of us were getting out of this with polite negotiations.
